Dolly Rebecca Parton
Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January
19 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee and raised in Sevierville, Tennessee to
Avie Lee Parton, a homewife and Robert Lee Parton, a tobacco farmer. At 12, she
was being telecast on Knoxville TV and at 13 she had already begun recording
for an independent label and performing at the Grand Ole Opry. She moved to
Nashville in 1964 to begin her country-singing career after she had graduated
from high school. Carl Dean, a asphalt-paving business owner, was her first lover.
They got married on May 30 in 1966. In 1967 , her singing attracted the
attention of Porter Wagoner, who hired her to appear on his program, The Porter
Wagoner Show (1961). She stayed on the show for seven years, her duets became
famous, and she sang with the Porter Wagoner group at the Grand Ole Opry. She
also sold records and toured. Her biggest hit "Joshua" was released
at #1 in 1970 was her biggest hit single. She decided to go solo, even though
she still recorded duets with him. She separated from him to be a
singer-songwriter on her own in 1974. Dolly was a massive success as a
singer/songwriter. Dolly received many Country Music Association awards
(1968-70 1971-1972 and 1975-1976 1976). The petite (5'0") beauty was a
natural for television. The mid-1970s saw her becoming a regular on TV. she was
appearing regularly on talk shows, and even before receiving her own Dolly
(1976). In 1977, Dolly got her first Grammy award: Best Female Country Vocal
Performance for her song "Here You Go Again." Dolly's film debut came
in 9 to 5 (1980) in which she received an Oscar nomination for her songwriting
of the title tune. She also received Grammy Awards 2, 3, Best Country Song, and
Best Female Country Vocal Performance for the song "Nine to Five." Her
most memorable role was in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982) and
Rhinestone (1984) in which she sang "Tennessee Homesick Blues". She
is the founder of Dolly Parton Enterprises, a 100 million-dollar media empire
and in 1986, she established Dollywood which is a theme park in Pigeon Forge,
Tennessee, in celebration of her Smoky Mountain upbringing. She appeared in the
television show Dolly (1987 TV Series) as herself. In 1988, she received
another Grammy: Best Country Performance Duo or Group with Vocals, for
"Trio".
